Kongony Technical and Vocational College (Kongony TVC) was established as part of the Government of Kenya’s initiative to expand access to technical education across all constituencies. The idea to create the institution arose from collaboration among community leaders, education stakeholders, and government representatives who recognized the need to equip local youth with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.

The college was built on land acquired with community and government support, beginning with essential infrastructure such as classrooms, workshops, and administrative offices. Kongony TVC admitted its first cohort of trainees in 2019, officially marking the start of its operations. It was later accredited by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), enabling it to offer approved certificate and diploma programs.

Since then, the institution has steadily expanded its facilities and academic departments, offering training in engineering, ICT, business, and other vocational fields. Today, Kongony TVC plays a key role in youth empowerment and regional socio-economic development.

Online Journalism is a practical and theoretical course designed to equip trainees with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to gather, produce, publish, and distribute news content through digital platforms. The course introduces students to the evolving landscape of digital media, focusing on online news writing, multimedia storytelling, social media reporting, data journalism, verification, and ethical practices in the digital environment.

The unit emphasizes hands-on experience where trainees learn how to pitch, research, write, edit, and publish digital stories across various online platforms including websites, blogs, social networks, and mobile channels. Learners also gain skills in the use of digital tools for content creation such as mobile journalism (MoJo), video editing apps, audio editing tools, analytics dashboards, and content management systems (CMS).

By the end of this course, trainees will be able to use digital tools effectively, adapt traditional journalism principles to online environments, engage audiences interactively, uphold media ethics, and produce professional multimedia stories suited for modern digital newsrooms.
